About the Kimono Fabric
This miniature parasol is made using silk from a vintage Japanese kimono.
The original kimono features colorful birds among delicate flowers, leaves, and flowing branches against a soft ivory background.
The birds are depicted in shades of coral pink, teal blue, lavender, and golden yellow, creating a lively contrast with the pale background.
In traditional Japanese textile designs, birds are often associated with the beauty of nature and the changing seasons. Together with the floral and botanical elements, they create a graceful and playful composition.
When transformed into a miniature parasol, the colorful motifs spread across the individual panels of the canopy, allowing the details of the original textile to be appreciated from different angles.
By transforming vintage kimono silk into a decorative object, AKIZAKURA offers another way to appreciate the colors, patterns, and craftsmanship of traditional Japanese clothing.
A New Life for Kimono
In Japan, kimono fabrics have long been valued and reused in different forms.
Traditionally, kimono could be taken apart, washed, and sewn again. Even when a kimono could no longer be worn, its fabric might be reused for other purposes rather than discarded.
At AKIZAKURA, we continue exploring how these textiles can be appreciated and enjoyed beyond their original purpose.
This miniature parasol brings together the beauty of vintage Japanese silk and the craftsmanship of a Tokyo umbrella maker, creating a small decorative piece that carries a connection to Japanese textile culture.
Through upcycling, we hope to give traditional kimono fabrics a new life while sharing an appreciation for the care, creativity, and craftsmanship behind them.
